The ability to “respec” in Elden Ring can easily become make-or-break for Tarnished, especially when tackling higher-level enemies. Larval Tears are needed for this process and are therefore prized in-game items.

Once Rennala; Queen of the Full Moon has been defeated, players can undergo a so-called “rebirth” in order to tweak their build at the cost of one Larval Tear. A total of eighteen can be found across The Lands Between and some can be quite tricky to locate.

An unconfirmed claim states that Larval Tears can drop more than once from Silver Ball enemies but even then, it supposedly requires many repeat runs.

Limgrave:

There is only one Larvel Tear to be found in Elden Ring’s starter area.

Site of Grace: Agheel Lake South

Location: When heading east from the SoG, players will find an Undead enemy holding a sword on a cliff (the image above has a fat red arrow pointing him out). Even though it is easily killed, it will turn into a particularly violent Werebear enemy after death. Once the bear has also been sent to oblivion, Tarnished will receive a Larval Tear for their effort.

Liurnia of the Lakes:

A total of four Larval Tears can be found in this large area.

Site of Grace: Folly on the Lake

Location: From the SoG, players should travel due southwest until they reach a path lined with hanged-ones. Continuing up this grisly trail will bring players to the “Village of the Albinaurics”. There is a graveyard in front of a ruined house and the Larval Tear can be found on a corpse.

Site of Grace: Folly on the Lake

Location: Tarnished should go northeast from the SoG, past the tall rock outcroppings, and towards a building with Lobster enemies sleeping around it. It might be a good idea to eliminate these dozy creatures before attacking the only one that isn’t taking a nap. Once put out of its misery, it will shapeshift into a Scion enemy which also needs to be dispatched before it relinquishes its Larval Tear.

Site of Grace: Behind Caria Manor (Is only accessible after defeating Royal Knight Loretta)

Location: (Is only available after finding the Resurrection Painting at the Artist’s Shack) From the SoG, players should travel in a more-or-less southern direction towards the part of the graveyard at the edge of the cliff. There are a number of Albinauric enemies lounging about that might need to be slain before Tarnished can approach the spirit in the chair (as shown in the image above). Interacting with the spirit will make it disappear, leaving behind a “Juvenile Scholar” cap and robe, as well as a Larval Tear.

Site of Grace: Behind Caria Manor OR Ranni’s Rise (if already discovered)

Location: If Tarnished is using the Behind Caria Manor SoG, head due northwest with the castle walls on the lefthand side towards the “Three Sisters” area. From there, travel downwards in the direction of the southernmost tower (Seluvis’s Rise). The “X” marked on the map above shows an estimated location. Players traveling from Ranni’s Rise should instead head southeast to reach this same destination.

A Silver Scarab is conveniently placed on the edge of the cliff to highlight where players should drop down onto the castle rampart. Looking over the edge on the right will reveal wooden scaffolding (as shown in the second image above). Jumping all the way down will lead to a square opening with a ladder that descends into the castle.

Early on in the game, an NPC called “Pidia” will sell players a number of items after exhausting his dialogue, including one Larval Tear for 3000 Runes. If players have progressed significantly through Elden Ring, they might find that the poor servant has met an early end. In this case, his body will yield a “Bell Bearing” that can be brought to the “Twin Maiden Husks” at Round Table Hold in order to buy his items from them instead.

Caelid:

This advanced region of the game is home to a single Larval Tear.

Site of Grace: Caelid Highway South

Location: From the above-mentioned SoG, players should head south towards a graveyard on a cliff. There will be a number of Undead enemies digging in the dirt but one of them decided to walk about with a sword instead. Upon his second death, he turns into a… TROLL *gasp*. Be careful not to fall off the cliff when fighting the giant beast because he carries with him a precious Larval Tear.

Altus Plateau:

Only a single Larval Tear can be found in the area beyond “The Grand Lift of Dectus”.

Site of Grace: Rampartside Path

Location: From the SoG, players should follow the path heading northeast. Beyond the mob of Undead enemies, there is a scattering of ruins (as shown in the image above). Just around the corner from the entrance, a Wandering Noble enemy can be found crouching in the corner. As on other occasions, he will transform, this time into a Lion Guardian enemy. Once killed, it will reward Tarnished with, oh yes, a Larval Tear.

Mount Gelmir: Elden Ring

The sinister mountain area is home to one Larval Tear.

Site of Grace: Road of Iniquity

Location: Players should approach the camp with a corpse fire, due east from the SoG. The lone Charred Corpse enemy will yet again pull a switcheroo when killed. The Wormface enemy that takes its place will attack players quickly and viciously but once it has also bit the proverbial dust of its once flaming form, it will reward Tarnished with a Larval Tear.

Consecrated Snowfield: Elden Ring

Yet again, only one Larval Tear is to be found in this zone.

Site of Grace: Consecrated Snowfield

Location: Players should travel due northeast from the SoG (through the unrelenting blizzard) towards the area marked on the map above. Behold! An unholy trio of Undead enemies; one holding a torch whilst its buddy is trying to dig a third cretin out of the snow. Killing the immobile one will make it transform into a Werebear enemy that drops a Larval Tear once players manage to defeat it.

Siofra River: Elden Ring

One Larval Tear can be found in this underground location.

© FromSoftware

Site of Grace: Worshipper’s Woods (access this underground region using the Siofra River Well Lift)

Location: From the SoG, players can see wooden scaffolding in the distance when facing southwest (see the first image above). The structure can only be accessed from the opposite side, however. There are two ladders to climb, both of which put players face-to-face with an Ancestral Follower enemy.

From the top of the scaffolding, players can drop down on the right side of the pillar and continue through the stone doorway, past the waterfall, and the cave until they reach another drop-down into a secret area. A Nomadic Merchant will sell Tarnished a Larval Tear for 3000 Runes.

Nokron, Eternal City:

The underground city is home to a total of four Larval Tears.

Site of Grace: Nokron, Eternal City (Only accessible after defeating Starscourge Radahn)

Location: When exiting the SoG’s building, players will see a gazebo-like structure right in front of them. Tarnished should head southeast and into the first building on the right. A Larval Tear can be found on a corpse guarded by two Undead enemies digging in the dirt.

Site of Grace: Nokron, Eternal City (Only accessible after defeating Starscourge Radahn)

Location: From the SoG, players should travel due northeast, past the gazebo, through the high arch, and down the stairs. Following the dirt path in a southeasterly direction will bring players to yet another gazebo. Beware the enemies on the way down as well as the Silver Tear enemies that drop down from the structure’s ceiling. The Larval Tear can be found on the corpse inside the gazebo.

Site of Grace: Nokron, Eternal City (Only accessible after defeating Starscourge Radahn)

Location: Two Larval Tears will drop after Tarnished defeats the Mimic Tear Boss. From the second gazebo location mentioned before, players should continue along the path and into the boss arena as shown in the image above.

Site of Grace: Mimic Tear

Location: From the SoG, players should cross the bridge towards the Ancestral Woods and continue in a northwesterly direction before turning onto a dirt path (left from the singing Ancestral Follower enemy next to the pillar). Behind the rocks, players will find the Ancestral Woods SoG. Jumping off the cliff will bring Tarnished into the part of Nokron called “Night’s Sacred Ground”.

Players should carefully descend along the edges of the buildings until they reach a ruined arch/bridge (as shown in the image above). On the other side of the bridge, Tarnished should cross through the large open window and into the cathedral-type building. From the balcony, a stationary Silver Ball enemy can be seen which will crush anything in its path when approached. Destroying this menace will yield a Larval Tear.

Nokstella, Eternal City:

The last area to be covered in this guide has three additional Larval Tears to be discovered.

© FromSoftware

Site of Grace: Nokstella, Eternal City (Only accessible after completing Ranni’s Quest past Nokron)

Location: From the SoG, Tarnished should head up the first staircase and make their way towards the bridge (as shown in the image above). A Silver Ball enemy will roll down the staircase and across the bridge in an attempt to squash players. If the ball is destroyed instead of the player, it will reward Tarnished with a Larval Tear.

© FromSoftware

Site of Grace: Nokstella, Eternal City (Only accessible after completing Ranni’s Quest past Nokron)

Location: After destroying the ball on the bridge, players can find a building on the right with another Silver Ball enemy hanging from its ceiling. If approached carefully, it can be destroyed in place using ranged attacks in order to unburden it of its Larval Tear.

© FromSoftware

Site of Grace: Nokstella, Eternal City (Only accessible after completing Ranni’s Quest past Nokron)

Location: Going up the stairs from which the first ball descended, players can progress into a building with yet another Silver Ball enemy hanging from its ceiling. This one leaks electric Silver Tear enemies onto the floor continuously and will only drop down when approached. Once the room is cleared of threats, Tarnished will receive the last known Larval Tear.

If Tarnished spends their Larval Tears wisely, they will be able to respec into the perfect build for conquering The Lands Between and becoming… Elden Lord!
