Official Synopsis: Hogwarts Legacy is an immersive, open-world action RPG set in the world first introduced in the Harry Potter books. For the first time, experience Hogwarts in the 1800s. Your character is a student who holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart. Now you can take control of the action and be at the center of your own adventure in the wizarding world. Your legacy is what you make of it.

Character Creation:

By distancing itself from the Harry Potter saga and its timeline, Hogwarts Legacy has the potential to create a whole new immersive experience. Players have access to rich character creation tools in order to become the witch or wizard they’ve always wanted to be. Shortly after their arrival at Hogwarts, the famous “Sorting Hat” allows players to decide whether they will be a Gryffindor, a Hufflepuff, a Ravenclaw, or a Slytherin.

Once their choice is made, players will be able to fully explore their house’s common rooms. Certain housemates can become friends that offer unique bonuses and eventually the possibility of taking them along on adventures as companions.

Life at Hogwarts starts by attending classes such as potions, charms, and of course… defense against the dark arts. Soon, it becomes apparent that players will need everything they have learned to fight a new enemy.

Story:

Rendered beautifully in the Unreal Engine 4, Hogwarts Legacy is set in the 1800s. The player’s character has joined the school of witchcraft and wizardry in Year 5 and has a lot of catching up to do. Although many locations will be familiar, professors and other key characters will be fresh faces (or rather older ones).

Apart from attending school, the player’s character has the ability to manipulate a powerful form of ancient magic, making them a target for one of the game’s villains; Ranrok and his goblin rebellion. Players will need to use everything they learned from their classes and special catch-up lessons to navigate a world of danger with the help of the enigmatic professor Fig. They will face creatures corrupted by a sinister magical force, powerful goblins as well as dark wizards & witches all fighting to achieve their own goals.

Gameplay:

Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world RPG where players can freely explore the school grounds, Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forests, and many never before seen areas. Thanks to their lessons, players will have an arsenal of defensive & offensive spells, companion plants that attack enemies, as well as potions that boost their skills and abilities.

Magical items can be bought and looted throughout the vast open world and can even be crafted. Places such as Hogsmeade sell specialized gear, unique plant seeds and potion ingredients. In order to move around the different areas of the game, players will also have the satisfaction of being able to fly their very own broom.

One of the more exciting elements, however, is the player’s personal “Room of Requirement”. Players can add stations to brew potions, place planters to grow seeds (including mandrakes), and a loom to upgrade their gear. There is even the possibility to build and fully customize vivariums that are home to magical creatures which have been tamed in the wild.

Conclusion:

As showcased in the gameplay trailer above, it looks like Hogwarts Legacy will offer players a very personal experience with lots and lots to do. By stepping away from the constrictions of the Harry Potter timeline, the game is free to be its own entity but will it still be familiar? Will the game’s magic be strong enough to give us that feeling of homecoming in a world we know so well?

We will have to wait until December of this year to find out but I’m pretty darn excited.
