The second trailer for the newest mainline Pokémon games, Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet, has been released and showcases plenty of new information. New Pokémon, new areas of the map, new characters and even a first look at the new Legendary Pokémon.
Let’s breakdown the trailer and have a look at what new things are in store.
Including the new Legendary Pokémon, 5 new Pokémon were revealed in this trailer: Lechonk, Smoliv and Pawmi being three new Pokémon that come from, the starting area of the game.
Lechonk: Normal Type Hog Pokémon
Lechonk is described as the ‘Hog Pokémon’ on the official Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Website and is a Normal-type. It is going to have either the ability Aroma Veil or Gluttony.
The website describes Lechonk as:
Lechonk uses its sense of smell to find and eat only the most fragrant wild grasses and the richest Berries. As a result of its dining habits, it has come to radiate an aroma resembling herbs that bug Pokémon dislike.Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet Official Page
Whether Lechonk is taking the place of whatever ‘rodent’ Normal-type Pokémon (such as Zigzagoon or Bidoof) is unclear right now but I would have to guess, seeing as the players rival uses Lechonk in battle.
Pawmi: Electric Type Mouse Pokémon
Pawmi is the ‘Mouse’ Pokémon and it is a normal type first used by the player’s rival, Nemona. It is an Electric type Pokémon with the abilities Static or Natural Cure.
The official website describes Pawmi as:
In addition to the electric sacs in its cheeks, Pawmi has electricity-discharging organs on its forepaws. It generates electricity by rubbing its cheeks, then it shocks its opponents by touching them with the pads on its forepaws.Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet Official Page
Pawmi appears to very much take after Pikachu (who themselves is the Electric Mouse Pokémon) and will probably be our Pikachu clone for the region similar to Emolga, Dedenne and Togedemaru. Whether it will evolve is not clear.
Smoliv: The Grass/Normal Olive Pokémon
Smoliv is a small olive, and is the ‘Olive’ Pokémon with a Grass/Normal typing. It will be able to get the ability Early Bird.
The official website says this about Smoliv:
The oil that comes out of its head has a very strong bitter taste, and it is not suitable for consumption. When startled or attacked, Smoliv will shoot this oil out, slowing its opponent down. It will then seize that moment to run away.Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet Official Page
Smoliv appears to be the early Grass type for this generation (similar to Glossifleur of Pokemon Sword and Shield) but the addition of Normal to it’s typing is interesting. This Pokémon is also used by your rival at the beginning of the game.
New Legendary Pokémon: Koraidon and Miraidon
The box art Legendary Pokémon for the 9th Generation has been revealed as Koraidon and Miraidon, who appear to symbolise the past and the future respectively. The official website says that:
These two Pokémon are said to have powers that far surpass those of other Pokémon, but details about Koraidon and Miraidon are still shrouded in mystery.Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet Official Page
Alongside the new Professors of the region, each of these Legendaries appears to symbolize either the past or the future, with Koraidon’s more rustic and wild style contrasting with the sleek machinery of Miraidon. We do not know about their typing right now, but both appear to be lizards so perhaps both are Dragon-type (something not seen in a Legendary Pokémon since Pokémon Black and White) with Koraidon potentially being Ground and Miraidon being Steel.
New Characters: Rivals and Professors
We got to see three new NPC’s in the trailer, including the new Professors of the region.
For the first time, each game will have a different professor: Pokémon Scarlet will have Professor Sada, whereas Pokémon Violet will have Professor Tuso. Each Professor mirrors the Legendary their game is based upon, with Sada’s design being far more rugged and seemingly based off a cavewoman, while Tuso’s is very futuristic and modern. How these differences will tie into the story is unknown but it is a interesting change.
The other new character shown off is one by the name of Nemona, who appears to be the player’s rival.
She fights with all of the starting Pokémon listed above according to the official website, and her outfit appears to change depending on the game you are playing: she will match the outfit of the player, so orange in Scarlet and purple in Violet. So far it is unclear if she will take more after Gary or after Hop, but we will just have to wait and see.
New Gameplay Features: 4 Player Co-Op and Open World
The gameplay trailer gave us a good look at some of the new features and some of the new characters that we will encounter in our journey through Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet.
The first of which is 4 player co-op.
According to both the trailer and the website, players will be able to play alongside 3 of their friends as they explore the world, battling and catching Pokémon. The official website says that you can ‘explore the various locations of the region in these games with other players. You can discover new Pokémon and explore unfamiliar areas with your friends and family which is certainly a new direction for the series.
Up to now, the co-op had only been available for battling and trading with other players, and even in Generation 8’s Wild Area, the other players were not playing alongside you. How this will work in real-time is yet to be seen, but hopefully, it will innovate upon the Wild Area before it.
The world of Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet also appears to be completely open world. Previous games were quite linear in how they expected you to go through the region, even if routes occasionally had dungeons or additional paths to tread. It seems as if Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet will allow the player to go anywhere they wish at the start of the game.
The official website describes:
You can experience a new style of adventure, with a world that you’re free to explore at your leisure and not in an order dictated by the story. You will, of course, journey to hone your skills as a Pokémon Trainer, but many more discoveries and stories await you.Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet Official Page
Progression in the story is distinct from progression in the world. We have already seen a few biomes in the world so far, so being able to go to anywhere we want before beginning our journey is a curious one. This may explain some other peculiar elements, such as the fact that the Pokémon Centre’s are now more like petrol stations that players visit within the open world or the lack of town footage.
Whatever the case, these are new steps forward for Pokémon that seem to be innovating on the work done in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.
The final key piece of information given out is that of the release date.
Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet will launch worldwide on Friday, November 18th and can be pre-ordered now.
If the Pokémon Company keeps to tradition, we may expect to see some gameplay show up in a few weeks (which is usually recorded at the Nintendo Treehouse Live at E3) where hopefully more information and more questions are answered.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are out in November available exclusively on Nintendo Switch. All information can be found on their official website.
