Perhaps the most interesting part of Monday Night Raw this week is a developing story taking place outside of the squared circle. It has been reported by WWE themselves, among others, that Sasha Banks and Naomi left during the show after allegedly becoming unhappy with the creative direction being planned for them, though, there are multiple reports about what exactly caused the walkout.
Somewhat uncharacteristically, WWE has released a statement on the matter, rather quickly: “When Sasha Banks and Naomi arrived at the arena this afternoon, they were informed of their participation in the main event of tonight’s Monday Night Raw.
During the broadcast, they walked into WWE Head of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis office with their suitcases in hand, placed their tag team championship belts on his desk, and walked out.
They claimed they weren’t respected enough as tag team champions. And even though they had eight hours to rehearse and construct their match, they claimed they were uncomfortable in the ring with two of their opponents even though they’d had matches with those individuals in the past with no consequence. Monday Night Raw is a scripted live TV show, whose characters are expected to perform the requirements of their contract.
We regret we were unable to deliver, as advertised, tonight’s main event.”
The main event of Raw was supposed to be a six-pack challenge, in which Sasha and Naomi were both set to compete. It is being reported that Naomi was set to win the match by pinning Sasha, mind you, they are the current women’s tag team champions of WWE. The main event was changed during the show to be Becky Lynch v. Asuka, where the winner would become the number one contender.
Typically, WWE opts to stay quiet on internal matters such as this, so it does seem a bit odd that they would release such a statement, especially so soon. This leads many to believe the whole ordeal could be a work (storyline), though, it does seem unlikely at this point given the discourse from other wrestlers regarding the news.
At any rate, we will all just have to wait and see how the rest of this situation plays out.
