In no order, these are the ten most genre-defining RPG’s of this decade. For story reasons, to visual reasons, to an abundance of both. Let’s skip the wait and dive in !!!

10. Persona 5 Royal –

What is there to be said about Persona Five that has not already been said? From its breath-taking visuals, amazing cast, and music so good that it will have you humming it, even years after you have beaten the game.

The sequel to the already beloved Person Four Gold. Persona 5 It built on top of everything its predecessor did, and then managed to do it better. From the incredible palaces, ways to spend time in the big city of Tokyo, and spending time with many beloved characters in the franchise now. There is a reason the original Persona Five now has multiple spinoffs, which include the infamous phantom thieves.

9. Elden Ring –

The most recent entry on this list is Elden Ring. From the veteran developers from software, who brought you Bloodborne, Dark Souls, and Sekiro, it’s no surprise that when from software set out to create an open-world style of RPG, it was going to be a special kind of RPG.

Elden Ring takes the open-world formula and completely makes it into something exceptional, from the illustrious sense of open-world exploration to the jaw-dropping world-building, and just immense boss fights. Elden Ring is truly from Software’s magnum opus, and that says something when you look at their portfolio of work. I could go on and on about Elden Ring, but I’m sure you’ve heard more than enough about this masterpiece of a game.

8. Yakuza 0 –

Yakuza zero happens when you mix all the chaotic mayhem of GTA with the dazzling nightlife of Japan. The prequel set before the first yakuza has you following the stories of fan favorites and character veterans Kiryu Kazama and Goro Majima through their chaotic and thrilling backstories.

Yakuza zero has every right to be on this list for several reasons. Firstly, the gameplay is the best here out of the whole series. The storyline and characters you meet on the way are just brilliant and larger than life. And finally, the city the game is set in Kamurochō is so vibrant and crawling with life that it’s impossible to forget even after completing the game.

7. Mass Effect 2 –

Would it be a top ten RPG of all time list without a Mass Effect entry?. Many of Bioware’s title’s alone could take up half the list. However, to keep it to one, it’s got to be Mass Effect 2.

At a time when Bioware was producing masterpiece after masterpiece. Mass Effect 2 was some of their best work as a studio. With a story that had such incredible writing, each decision had you wondering if you had made the right call. To each character written so amazingly, it’s hard to see any fault with Mass Effect 2, you could argue 1 is better and some even 3, but 2 takes the cake as from a game viewpoint, it did what Mass Effect already did so well and built upon it and made it into something that even a decade later, RPG fans still call a transformative experience in the gaming medium as a whole.

6. Final Fantasy 7 Remake –

When talking about genre-defining RPG’S it would be outrageous not to include Final Fantasy 7. In 1997 when the game released, it showed just how powerful and capable the PlayStation system could be.

Furthermore, the characters were extremely compelling and out of this world. Mix those characters in with the brilliant plot and gameplay and it is no surprise that when Final Fantasy 7 released, it took the world by storm, and at the time it became PlayStation’s second bestselling game on the system. after years of crying out for a remake from the fans, in 2015 Square Enix showed a simply breath-taking trailer, and after five years of waiting in 2020, fans got a remake so true yet breath-taking compared to the original that it had made the three-decade wait worth it.

5. NieR Automata –

From the brilliant mind of Yoko Taro, NieR Automata is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience in the gaming medium. Some may argue that it’s not an RPG, but it’s sold as one and therefore deserves a spot on this list. There truly is no game like NieR Automata set in the world where you play as a human android called 2b your main goal is to fight another machine army that is trying to invade another world.

However, the game is so much more than that, including over 5 endings in the game which you have to work through to get the true ending. With just immense gameplay, an orchestrated soundtrack so good it deserves a written blog itself, and a plot from the crazed and brilliant Yoko Taro, this is easily not just one of the best RPGs of this generation but also Games of this generation.

4. Dragon Quest 11 –

Dragon Quest is a JRPG series that needs no introduction, The series has been held to the highest level of praise in the genre, and for good reason. Dragon Quest 11 is the Dragon Quest Series at its highest peak

with over 80 hours of content, Dragon Quest 11 is the perfect love letter to the JRPG genre, with visuals so outstanding and engaging, to the simple yet classic turn-based style combat, to the open-world so vast and crying out for exploration. Dragon Quest 11 is a must-play if you love the RPG genre, and have never played a Dragon Quest Game.

3. FallOut: New Vegas –

Bethesda needs no introduction when it comes to the RPG genre. And Fallout New Vegas doesn’t either. New Vegas is without a doubt the best in the fallout series and it has been since its release.

From the barren world destroyed due to the nuclear apocalypse, no game manages to capture the nuclear open world vibe as accurately as Fall out New Vegas. I could sit here for hours talking about this game, but just like another Bethesda entry on this list, it’s talked about more than enough, if you haven’t played this, definitely do as this was Bethesda at their peak.

2. The Witcher 3 –

The Witcher 3 is considered by many to be the best RPG ever made. And the game does everything to back that statement up. From a cast of characters so well written, you would think they exist to a protagonist so likable that he’s become a gaming staple.

There are several things to say about The Witcher 3, from the world of The Continent you inhabit and journey across as Geralt of Rivia, to side missions so good you could easily mistake them for main story missions. to simply just everything about the game as a whole.

Everything that CD Project Red put into The Witcher 3 came from a place of passion and love, which is why it’s adored and hailed by so many.

1. Skyrim –

To keep it short, Skyrim is one of the best gaming experiences you can have with a game. Bethesda’s Skyrim is a masterpiece from start to finish.

With side storylines that could have games dedicated to themselves, to the world of Skyrim constantly chucking things at you, to a soundtrack so amazing it makes you feel like you are the chosen Dragonborn.

Skyrim is one of the best RPGs you can play and chances are if you like RPGs you’ve already played it. But a list of top ten RPGs of this generation without Skyrim, just wouldn’t make sense.

The End!

That concludes the top ten RPGs of this generation. If you think there should have been some other games on this list, or maybe a game that deserves an honorable mention, let us know.
